10 Healthy Ideas Using Peaches… In Season Now!

Did you know that we are currently in the midst of the 2013 Georgia Peach Season? The peak season this year began in June and will continue through mid August. I know I have seen these fresh peaches pop up in local farmers markets and groceries. Peaches are high in water content, low in calories, adding some fiber and other vitamins like vitamin C and vitamin A to your day.

Have you seen them? Check your local produce stores and farmers markets!

I love a ripe and juicy peach, who doesn’t? If you are like me, you may buy a half dozen peaches at the store and then end up with a half dozen ripe peaches all at once! A ripe peach is soft to the touch, feels heavy for it’s size, and smells like a peach!  To ripen peaches, leave out on the counter or place inside a brown paper bag.

Nature's Candy! Peaches have a high water content making them a refreshing summer snack.

The other tricky thing about peaches, is how to peel them. The proper way to peel a peach is actually to blanch them by scoring them, heating quickly in hot water and immediately place in a ice water bath. To be honest, I always tackle my peaches with a knife… not the easiest.  There is a technique to it as to not bruise the soft flesh or squish out all the juices. For a good knife slicing tutorial visit: http://jamiecooksitup.net/2011/09/how-to-cut-and-peel-peaches/

So once those slimy squishy fruits are peeled and ready to eat, what can you do with the abundant fruit? Here are my healthy ways to add peaches into your life:

  • Add diced peaches to salads  – you won’t need much dressing with these added!

  • Top off Greek yogurt for a snack – getting some protein with your sweet snack

  • Cook with peaches, try my Mango and Peach Chutney over Mahi Mahi

  • Stir into oatmeal, along with cinnamon – mmmmm!

  • Grill them with your meats – really jazz up a grill out!

  • Freeze them for smoothies – slice, dice, spread out on cookie sheet and freeze – after frozen combine into bag, so the fruit won’t freeze as one big clump

  • Enjoy as a snack, on it’s own – really satisfying on a hot summers day

  • Dehydrate them in a dehydrator or in the oven (preheat to 140 degrees, slice, soak in ascorbic acid, spread on cookie sheet, cook with door slightly open, trying times will vary-plan on being home all day)

  • Canning – My Aunt is the queen of homemade jams!

  • Crust-less pies or peach crisps – crusts of pies usually contain trans fats, so enjoy a baked fruit dessert crust-less!
